busseat

Last week Gabby got fitted into her very own seat on the big kids school bus. Tomorrow is the big day – THE first day of school. And she is sooooooooo ready. Big Girl School! She spent today with mom packing all her necessities – towel, blanket, sleeping bag, backback, etc. We’ll get her there. She’ll be riding the bus home.

It’s great being a kid in the mountains. Look at all the animals!

FRIDAY – Gabby gets her first pony ride, at the circus.

SATURDAY – Gavin gets up close with a donkey (Wolfgang) and horse (Reba) during a friend’s birthday party.

SUNDAY – We see a deer! No photo or video. It was next door at an abandoned house eating from an apple tree. Afterwards Gabby tells me, “Dad? Guess what’s in my head? My head is full of thoughts thinking about what deer eat! .. Do deer eat cherries?”

TUESDAY – Time to feed the ducks. And show them your baseball. Epilogue – shortly after putting my phone away, Gavin attempted to hand feed a duck. It bit him on the finger! No damage. No biggie. Just shock.

Sugar free

cottoncandygab

We recently introduced the Gs to cotton candy. It was at our recent Swampdogs game. It was just after 9:30. At night. And we had no misgivings.

“WHAT! Are you CRAZY!?! They’ll be up all night!”

Nah. No prob. Cause both Gs are sugar proof. Not sure how or why, but it’s true. Gabby has been known to down a cupcake, three cookies and a Tum-E-Yumiee at 8:30 p.m. and be out like a narcoleptic by 9:45.

Gavin? Same way. A popcicle whether at noon or eight has no real impact on his 1 p.m. nap or 9 bedtime. No bragging. Just saying. Whatever sugar rush they get, it rushes quick.

Not to say it doesn’t have some impact.

And, no lie, they were out within 75 minutes of the rush.

gabschoolwindmill

It was a dark, cloudy mourn recently when I took the Gs to school. This is a view of the Boone windmill as seen from Gabby’s classroom. To this day, she and her brother still get excited when they see it.

Not the greatest video, but so you have a better idea of how it looks.

Dog Pound

Went to a Fayetteville Swampdogs game last Friday night. Amazingly, Big G overcame his “Large Mute Animal” fear to give the team mascot Fun-Go some digital love.

This came after his sissy put him to shame. She’s doesn’t hug mascots as much as tackle. And I love how the crowd made sure to get that Dawg’s attention.

This was my first trip to J.P. Riddle Stadium since the 90s, when my aunt abandoned me and two friends in the parking lot. We barely escaped with our lives! (Not really, but it’s a long story). My grandfather was also a HUGE supporter of the team. He had players over to his house for dinner. Collected broken bats to make pencil holders. He was honored by the team with his own card, labeled “No. 1 Fan.”

Of course, that was when the team was called the Generals. They later became the Crocs; now the Swampdogs. And they’re good too!

Best part of the night? We apparently scored seats in the heckling section, aka the Dawg Pound. Best taunt? “Hey pitcher! Your momma called! She said it’s time to walk the dog!”

Second best part? Whenever the home team crossed home plate, the home PA played .. of course .. “Who Let The Dogs Out?” It was just the chorus. And in the break between lines, the crowd chanted the pitchers number.

SONG: Who let the dogs out?

CROWD: 2!!!!!! … 1!!!!!!!!!

SONG: Who let the dogs out?

CROWD: 2!!!!!! … 1!!!!!!!!!

They did this while madly stutter stomping on the metal bleachers. Awesome.

gabcake09

We had Gabby’s birthday party a couple Saturday’s ago. The wife made the cake herself. She started brewing just after 9 that morning and had it iced and ready well before the 2 p.m. party time. And yes, that’s an actual Barbie popping out the top.

About a dozen kids came for the party. After two hours of running, playing, trampolining and eating, the final three au revoirs came with extra helpings of tears. They did not want to go! Quoting one girls, begging her mom, “Promise I can come back. Please let me come back!”

So I guess I know what she wished for. That everyone would beg to stay and play!

Boomerang Boogie

Gabby spent last week at her third VBS of the summer. The theme here was “Boomerang Express.” The commencement was Friday, which opened with the week’s theme song. As expected, she got really into it.

As for that football purse, Gabby brought it on her own. Her teachers told the class whoever sang the loudest would get some candy. So Gabby came prepared – with a bag.

Kick start

A couple months ago the wife was at the local Habitat ReStore and found – brand new and unopened – a baseball pitchback. For $10. What a deal! Saturday evening I finally got around to putting it together. It was meant for Big G. But that bad boy is now for me!

I think I’m in glove!
pitchback
I spent an hour throwing at it Saturday, and another hour yesterday. Both days till my elbow felt like strained pebbles. I felt pretty good about hitting the strike zone …. until I actually bothered to look up the actual distance between a hitter and pitcher. Sixty feet!?! I measured it out. Really? That far? Randy Johnson throws THAT fast THAT far? No Rookie sequel for me.

Gavin watched me attempt to pretend to try and be a real pitcher. He saw some minor leaguers do it live. And on his first try, he did his best to imitate.

PERFECT!
